   CONSUMER BANKRUPTCY

The most common types of  bankruptcy  for individual consumers are Chapter 7 and Chapter
13.  The majority of bankruptcy filings by consumers are for Chapter 7 relief. In Chapter 7, a
debtor is granted a discharge from most debts in exchange for giving up his or her non-exempt
property to a bankruptcy trustee.  There are limits to what debts can be discharged and how
much property the debtor may keep. In a Chapter 13 case, the debtor with a steady income can
keep his or her assets but must make regular payments on a plan for  three years or more.
